A couple of weeks ago I had the privilege of meeting Julia Skinner @theheadsoffice.
Julia was spending the day in the north east of England working with children and then delivering a twilight session explaining the 100 word challenge.
Julia arrived at the same time as I did and as we were both signing in she presented me with the most wonderful gift. She knows my love of shoes and, well, see for yourself.
It is now proudly on display with some chocolate shoes and new pink fairy lights.
Julia took us through the different hooks and processes that can be used for different word challenges.
The first starter for a 100 word challenge is the sentence prompt. Children are given a sentence to use in their writing.
The sentence does not have to be the opening sentence but one where children can use it at any point in their writing.
The second prompt is the picture prompt, I am sure this is one most of have used many a time when asking children to describe settings etc….
The third writing prompt is an individual word prompt. These are examples of words that children would have to use in their piece of writing.
Julia described how writing would be uploaded to the 100wc webpage through linky.
This quote is simply fabulous.
The power of having other children and adults reading what you have written online is incredible. Children can’t wait to see if someone has commented on their writing and it encourages them more to write when they receive feedback and suggestions for ideas or improvement.
100word challenge has grown so much that there is a team of people who regularly read and comment on the writing. It really is powerful to see.
@Cherise_Duxbury on twitter has wonderful success with writing through 100wc.
100WC is great for homework and peer assessment.
Following this session we were privileged to listen to some of the children who had been working with Julia. Their presentation skills were ORRsome.
The children of Stephenson Memorial Primary School are a credit to their teachers and school.
They shared useful APPs with us including socrative, showbie, voice thread etc….
